PS I Love You - "Facelove"

your love is like a giant strawberry thrown in my face

your love is like a delicious glass of wine thrown in my face

your love is like a naive dream of mine thrown in my face

Chiddy Bang Ft. Kate Nash - "Breakfast"

This song with two parts Chiddy Bang and a dose of Kate Nash is part of a balanced breakfast:

Xaphoon Jones is a genius, but i really like Chiddy's lyrics. They're very intelligent ("Not an SAT so don't test this"), relevant and at times political.

Download the song here.

SUNBEARS!

SUNBEARS! is a drum + keyboard + laptop duo from Jacksonville, Florida. I've actually seen them in concert-- they opened up for a Mates of State concert in Toronto in April 2009.

I'm not even joking; I remember the drummer being awesome, I remember they had a projection show, which now i realize was very avant-garde for the time. (see 3rd video)

And i remember being like "who are these people?" because they were playing when we came in. They were the pre-opener act, i.e. they opened for the opening band Black Kids, who ended up being better than Mates of State.

Bed Intruder Christmas

In the spirit of the holidays (..and all that crap), here is a Christmas carol version of Antoine Dodson/Gregory Brothers' Bed Intruder Song:

Watch until 3:20 for when gets exciting.

Filmography 2010

270 of this year's videos mashed up in a 6-minute video. actually pretty cool.

Music:
1. Ratatat - Nostrand
2. Kanye West - Power
3. Rooney - Not In My House
4. Apartment - Fall Into Place
5. Civil Twilight - Letters from the Sky
6. SUNBEARS! - Little Baby Pines

Robyn Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony

Robyn, the quintessential pop princess, performed as part of the Nobel Peace Prize Concert on Dec. 11, 2010:

She performs
1) Jag vet en dejlig rosa, a Swedish folk song.
2) Dancing On My Own
3) Indestructible

This is an unstoppable performance; Robyn is on fire. Not only does she showcase her incredible vocals (i cant get over how could she sounds live!) but also her boundless energy and enthusiasm. The saddest part is that no one is dancing (or even showing the least bit of head movement)-- i guess diplomats dont dance.

You may or may not remember Robyn's 2008 performance at the same ceremony. She sang heart-droppingly beautiful acoustic version of "Be Mine":

Reasons for seeing the new Tron film:

#1. The Daft Punk soundtrack
#2. Olivia Wilde's skin.
#3. The light cycle chase scene. (i googled 'Tron car' lol)
#4. The special effects?
#5. The Tourist was sold out.

Conclusion: the only reason for wanting to see this film is the new Daft Punk music. Touche Disney, Touche.

Q.E.D.

SIDENOTE! this is my 200th post! holy fack.

Maps & Atlases - "Solid Ground"

Little Comets - "Joanna"

UK-based band Little Comets

12.02.2010

Iron & Wine - "Walking Far From Home"

new song from his forthcoming album Kiss Each Other Clean, which comes out January 25, 2011.

12.01.2010

Freelance Whales - "Generator 1st Floor"

did you know you can embed from myspace? neither did i. how can you embed from the lifeless corpse of a social network? fact: the music part of myspace is the only thing keeping it alive; it's its automatic respirator.

Find more artists like Freelance Whales at Myspace Music

Update: the fact that the above embed failed to work only reaffirms my earlier point.

Freelance Whales are a great band to rediscover. to me, their music is what organic feels like. and theyre playing in Toronto at El Mocambo Dec. 7.

SIDENOTE! that reminds me of this "amazing" joke i once thought up:

What's Elmo's favourite concert venue in Toronto? The EL MOcambo.

Passion Pit - Little Secrets (Felix da Housecat Remix)

Dance/wake up song of the day:

11.30.2010

Ellie Goulding - "Little Dreams"

i'm not usually the biggest fan of Ellie Goulding's stuff, but this song caught my ears.

John Legend & The Roots - "Wake Up" (Arcade Fire cover)

a great twist on the song, especially at the end; but doesnt quite live up to the original.

cleaner studio version:

SIDENOTE: at Osheaga 2009 i actually saw The Roots not knowing who they were, but being pleasantly surprised by their contagious energy and performance. and then the next year at Osheaga 2010, Arcade Fire was the saturday night headliner and guess what song they closed the show with: Wake Up. (Coincidence? Potentially.)

The Killers - "Read My Mind"

one of my favourite music videos "of all time." love every second.

Starfucker - "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"

better than the Cyndi Lauper version??

Two Door Cinema Club - "I Can Talk"

and another good one:

11.25.2010

Gorillaz - "Crystalised" (the xx cover)

i love the xx, and i'll blog any good remix that comes my way.

Case in point: Brit-based Gorillaz's cover of Crystalised--

Robyn - Indestructible (A-Trak Remix)

A-Trak is more than an 'A track', he's tractless. There is no extent or lapse of time holding this guy back. His remixes float through space like Guglielmo Marconi's first transatlantic wireless signal in 1901. He is Signal Hill.

And here is his remix of Robyn's Indestructible:

SIDENOTE: A-Trak (Alain Macklovitch) is a Montreal-born disc jockey (DJ). He is one half of the disco house duo Duck Sauce, and his brother is the lead singer of the acclaimed electro-pop band Chromeo. Go Canada!

sooo much to blog about, so little time....... here goes!

11.17.2010

Pogo - "Alice"

Pogo is an electronic music ARTIST living in Perth, Western Australia (thank you Internet!). I want to stress the artist part because what he does is sheer musical genius. He takes sounds, chords and phrases from Disney movies and turns them into songs.

This is from Alice in Wonderland:

Of course, it's more of a lawsuit than Girl Talk's albums. And he details his legal struggles with the Disney juggernaut on his website.

11.10.2010

Pogo - "Wishery"

"This is my track Wishery, comprising vocal syllables, musical chords and sound effects recorded from the 1937 Disney classic Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs. Enjoy!"

wow. this is art. making a song out of Snow White is epic; making it sound simple and effortless makes it worth sharing.

Feist - "I Feel It All" (Diplo Remix)

i love it when someone takes a song and turns it into something you never couldve imagined coming from the original. it's like baking cookies and coming out with cake-- both delicious, but the latter is just soooo good.

take Diplo's remix of Feist's "I Feel It All:"

he turns the bouncy track into a head bobbing thumper.

SIDENOTE:
is it just me or is everyone remixing/covering Feist? or actually, it's more like Feist just makes such great music that it's remixing/covering potential is endless.

The Irrepressibles - "In This Shirt"

i came across this video on a friend's facebook wall; i've never heard of them, but am glad i found them.

They're called The Irrepressibles and wiki tells me they're a 10 piece orchestra band from London, UK, which is where the depth of the sound comes from. it reminds me of Cinematic Orchestra, another powerful instrumental collective.

Aside from that, this is one of the most beautiful videos I've ever seen. right from the first second, everything just feels perfect. the positioning, the lighting, the mystery-- it's beautifully crafted and shot. the feelings you get from the video are strong and powerful too, whether or not the context is clear. it's undeniably captivating.

the imagery, design and editing is truly masterful, in my opinion.

Robyn - "Time Machine"

NEW ROBYN!

Perez says she's "saved the best for last" and i kinda agree with him. this new song is off the final chapter of her epic triptych album "Body Talk."

James Blake - "Limit to your Love"

beautiful, demure cover of Feist's "Limit to your Love" by James Blake, whom the Internet tells me is an "up-and-comer."

that bass makes my heart shake, it feels like hands are reaching through my ribcage.

SIDENOTE:
i also cant get over how cool the video is. it's slowness, the dark tones, the floating fruit, the surf under the table. wonderful direction.

Coeur de Pirate - "Etienne d'aout" (Live)

10.29.2010

First Aid Kit - "You're Not Coming Home Tonight"

First Aid Kit is just. beautiful.

theyre such real singers, their voices... oh their voices.

i melt when everytime they sing that line :)

Oh Land - "Sun of a Gun"

i have been playing this song again and again nonstop for the past two days.

her name's Oh Land, she's a Dane, but she moved to Brooklyn *jeal.* apparently, she was discovered at SXSW 2009.

i would love to see to her live shows, she looks like an incredible performer. i mean check out this live clip--she's got balloons with projectors and that cool-ass light thing:

oh, and her tunes are catchy. and she's really pretty.

10.25.2010

I'm going to the Opera tonight!

check out my hair. I'm gonna call it 'the rose.' other names i was thinking were 'the swirl,' 'willy wonka,' or 'lollipop kid.'

I'm seeing 'Death in Venice' by Benjamin Britten, which is apparently about Apallonian vs. Dionysian creation.

ahh cant wait!

Uffie - "Difficult" (2006 Parties Remix by SebastiAn)

BY FAR my favourite remix of Uffie's mindblowing song "Difficult" is by the man who produced the song himself, SebastiAn's 2006 Parties Remix:

it builds to this incredible climaz and adds to the original song, even though the original stands on its own in my opinion.

Digitalism - "Blitz"

listen to and download here:

if you enjoy the 'electronic' music, hopefully you'll like these guys. i'm a fan of their stuff.

you may remember them from a Virgin Mobile commercial way long ago with a cartoon fish plugging a storm sewer, and like phones dropping from the sky:

that's how i first learned about Digitalism: googling to find the song.
the song in the ad is "Pogo" and here's the video:

(they disabled embedding, but check it out because it's a pretty cool video)

here's another option:

New Lykke! (lick-ee)

new Lykke Li!

long anticipated new stuff from the Swedish wunderkind. her debut went shitbangz all over the world, she played many major festivals (probably...) well, she played Osheaga and i was there, so ......................... yeah.

it must be daunting coming up with new material after reaching a pinnacle of sorts in the music world.

<-- yay! now i know what she's saying. thanks Lykke :)

ingrid, you were so much better on grey's.

it appears that Ingrid Michalesons (wwhatver) is graduating from the university of "stale toast" and beginning her graduate studies at the university of "oh, like this is actually cool... like it sounds good."

congrats you!

i'm glad i chose not to see you at Osheaga, even though Owen Pallett ended his set prematurely.

Dear Graham crackers,

i love you, but youre bringing me down.

i'd like to say it's not you, it's me; but the truth is it's you.

you've just gotten so much less attractive. like the fact that 2 crackers is 130 calories and 5% of my daily intake of fat. i'd always lose control over you, and like eat like four big crackers all at once.

oh, and that's another thing, youre so deceiving sometimes i cant take it. like you say '2 crackers is 130 calories', but you come in come in two squares that form a rectangle.. WHAT'S 2 CRACKERS!?? is it one long rectangle? or is that the cracker?

i just cant deal with this anymore. it's gotten to be too much. i'm sorry but i'm... leaving.

you can go find someone else to munch on you, like my mom.

I'm closing the box. For me and for you.

Sincerely,
Alan

Recipe for Change

for a solution, please mix:
2 parts wake the fuck up
1 part swift kick in the ass
2 tablespoons intelligent debate
1 1/2 teaspoons social organization
and a dash of hope.
Stir.
When all ingredients have blended, bake for a year or two. Enjoy!

this is a really great music video. not familiar with the band, but i'm always really impressed by people who do stop motion videos involving chalk.

parkour dog

this dog is so badass i cant even handle it right now.

i've never seen Rocky but i feel like this is what it'd be like.

friends dont let friends not have good remixes

this is a pretty cool remix from this pretty cool site. i dont know the guy who did it, but i bet he's pretty cool, too.

i like the beginning and the ending parts. the middle gets a little too dubby for me.

Zach Galifianakis

Zach Galifianakis was on The Hour last night. man, he is one funny guy. he has such impeccable comedic timing.

and it's funny that he was on yesterday because yesterday was when the book i ordered came in at the library and the funny thing is the book is "It's Kind Of A Funny Story," which is the movie Zach Galifianakis stars in. funny eh?

god i love Sarah Polley!

such a Canadianspiration.

and it's so true, Canadians dont have access to Canadian films.

Gordon Pinsent reads Justin Bieber

this is made so much better by the fact that i ran into Gordon Pinsent on the street once and had a five minute conversation with him. he was really nice and down-to-earth.

"The Legend of Pale Male"

this trailer just tugs at my heart strings.

i'm a sucker for animal stories; in particular, bird stories.

seriously, i think i might have to see this film to learn the entire story and find out how it ends. i'd totally be one of the those people protesting on the street.

"Tiny Furniture"

i want to see this buh-addddddly. it looks so fresh and honest. plus, it's like the kind of film that is based off real life and real things that people go through. not like the whole, 'omg the earth is exploding, we need to go put this star piece back in its holder in the sun before the manatees become mana-lunch!' kind of crap.

i also like that it's like about what's pretty much going on with me. AND the writer/director Lena Dunham used her real life sister and mother as actors, which is just downright awesome. that's how an artistic family support each other: they act in their coming-of-age indie film.

plus, it looks really funny.

the BEST two lines in the trailer are the first one and the last one:

"i fee like this outfit just screams like 'i've been living in Ohio for four years, take me back to your gross apartment and have sex with me." BAHAHAHAHHAHA! gee-nee-oose!

"- Do you like living here?"
- That is such a ridiculous question; I LOVE living here."

honourable mention goes to the felicity line.
Idina Menzel must be a FREAK in bed. How else could she bag Taye Diggs?

I mean her face looks like the toaster from that toaster film.

SIDENOTE: they probably met when they originated 'RENT' together off-broadway. And they probably developed a strong bond based on both of them being at the beginning of their careers, which over the years has blossomed into true love and now that beautiful strong love tree built on a foundation of mutual talent and goodlooks is bearing fruit in the form of mooladoo babies.

p.s. i dont know how to spell 'mooladoo' so i just spelt it pho-net-ic-ally. moo-la-doo. i would use 'u's but i have a rule in my life that wherever i can use a 'u' i use two 'o's instead. it makes things more fun.

if you have no frackity-flipping clue what i'm talking about with 'mooladoo,' that is the term used to describe the pinnacle of gorgeousness in our designer baby society. Other terms include, 'biracial' and my personal favourite: 'mocha babies.'

p.p.s. the scariest part of that toaster movie was when the sweet little dishcloth got stuck in the tree during the storm. I KNOW RIGHT! childhood trauma right there, man. the worst things always happen to the nicest dishcloths.

Anjulie - "Fuck You" (Cee-Lo Cover)

check out this acoustic cover by Canadian (m00t m00t!) singer Anjulie of Cee-Lo's catchy "Fuck You:"

the way she's re-done the lyrics is amazing.

my favourite line is: "Throws up all her rice cakes." lmao.

SIDENOTE:

i saw Anjulie perform at Maxwell's Coffee House in Waterloo way back in Fall 2008. she wasnt even the headliner, she opened for Pat Robitaille, but i do remember that i thought she was really good and thinking she'd definitely make it big. it was one of those "i-knew-her-before-you-knew-her" moments.

Charlotte and Bob lie a few feet apart on the bed.
CHARLOTTE (O.S.)
I'm stuck. Does it get easier.
BOB
No, yes, it does...
CHARLOTTE
Yeah? But look at you.
BOB
Thanks. It does, the more you know who you are... you don't care about things the same way...
CHARLOTTE
I just don't know what I'm supposed to be. I thought maybe I wanted to be a writer... but I hate what I write, and I tried taking pictures, but John's so good at that, and mine are so mediocre... and every girl goes through a photography phase, like horses, you know dumb pictures of your feet...
BOB
You'll figure it out. I'm not worried about you.

ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. the new Marc Jacobs website is so trashy!

seriously Marc, what happened? your website was soo good: the minimalist feel, how easy it was to navigate, big videos. it was representative of everything your brand stood for: sleek, intelligent design. now i have talk to avatars? fuck. fire your web person and please bring the old website back.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2011 soundtrack

near as I can tell, ONE of the songs used in the Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2011 show is: THE GO! TEAM - GRIP LIKE A VICE (QUARTERBAR REMIX)

Took me a while to find the remix of the original song after identifying it by the lyrics "Get ready for this, get ready for this. Party people in the place get ready for this."

still not sure if this is 100% the song used in the show, but this is the closest i could come up with.

Willow Smith wears golden chains around her neck cuz she's a scientologist

who does this bitch think she is? just cuz your dad's Will Smith doesnt mean you can walk around like you fucking own the place.

go fuck yourself.

omg i listened to the first 7 seconds of this song and then had to shut it off. the opening lyrics are "i wear my hair back and forth" again and again, which i could only listen to a couple of times before the industry-produced, 'starting your spawn off young', 'look-at-me-i'm-so-cool-cuz-i-have-a-hip-haircut-even-though-i'm-only-like-fucking-7' shit started to make my eyeballs bleed.

i jus'wanna smack those stupid sunglasses off your stupid face.

New Royksopp album

Royksopp's new album 'Senior' can be streamed in its entirety a week before it hits stores thanks to the Hype Machine.

just dont ask me how to pronounce their name. Royk-sopp. I just pronounce it phonetically.

nah i'm just kidding. Royksopp's been around for ages, theyre mainstays in the electronic music scene.

the tracks i liked from the new album were:

2. Tricky Two - overall the best song on the album, great beat and builds to a satisfying climax.

3. The Alcoholic - sounds like youre drunk in Willy Wonka's glass elevator.

4. Senior Living - subdued yet strong.

5. The Drug - second best track, most likely the first single.

8. Coming home - soft, soothing.

(9. A Long, Long Way - wtf is this? the 'Lost' theme?)

that's my take. take what you make and make what you take away. and make a comment.

Kylie Minogue - "Get Outta My Way" Official Video

Yay! Kylie Minogue's video for "Get Outta My Way" finally dropped yesterday! It's about time there's an HD version of this song on YouTube, i know i was getting concerned.

the video is awesome, there is:

- a magic light dancefloor
- floor writhing
- golden rope outfits
- wetness
- chairs
- sexy male dancers
- faggotry
- and, to top it all off, a golden claw at 1:37.

Really, everything you'd expect in a Kylie video: hot guys, hot dance moves and Kylie being the pop queen she is.

Kylie Minogue's "Get Outta My Way" is part of this balanced breakfast.

SIDENOTE!

I just wrote this whole blog post and then tried to embed the video only to find out that bitch disabled embedding! Correction, Kylie is NOT a part of this balanced breakfast, because a balanced breakfast includes embedding.

Casiokids!

really cool video not because it features Chace Crawford's long-lost Swedish brother, but because it's creative in a Spike Jonze-meets-Michel Gondry type of way.

and this other Casiokids video was sent to me by a guy on manroulette, no joke. dont google manroulette.

it's kinda creepy, with the mirror and all.
